Why printers ask for bleed

Print-on-demand covers are printed on an oversized sheet and then cut down to the finished trim size. The cutter works within a mechanical tolerance, so the blade never lands on exactly the same line twice. When the artwork stops precisely at the trim line, half of that tolerance shows up as a white sliver along the edge. Extending the image past the trim line by the required bleed distance means every cut inside the tolerance still lands on printed image.

How bleed changes a cover's dimensions

For a KDP paperback, the full sheet is the back panel plus the calculated spine plus the front panel, with 0.125 inches added beyond every outside edge. Width is therefore two trim widths plus the spine plus 0.25 inches in total, and height is the trim height plus 0.25 inches. The bleed area should carry real continued artwork — stretched edges or a mirrored strip are visible on the finished book.

Bleed, trim, and safe area are three different lines

The trim line is where the cutter aims: the finished book size. Bleed is the sacrificial image outside that line. The safe area is a margin inside the trim line where text, faces, and the barcode must stay, because the same cutting variance that eats bleed can also creep inward. Files fail review for both missing bleed and for text that crosses the safe boundary.
