Why this happens
A case-laminate cover extends beyond the visible boards and folds around them. KDP's hardcover template includes a 0.51-inch outer wrap, 0.4-inch hinge zones, a hardcover-specific spine, and larger safe margins. A paperback sheet or a dust-jacket layout does not contain that geometry, even when the trim size and front design look the same.
The complete manual fix
Confirm that the KDP edition is set up as case laminate hardcover and that its trim and final interior page count are locked.
Generate a new KDP hardcover template for those exact settings. Do not reuse the paperback template or add guessed margins around it.
Rebuild the complete sheet using the template's back board, hinge, spine, hinge, front board, and outer wrap areas.
Extend background artwork through the hinges and 0.51-inch wrap, but keep words, faces, logos, and other critical content at least 0.635 inches from the book edge and outside the hinge margins.
Flatten transparency, embed fonts, remove crop marks, colour bars, guide text, and template artwork, then export one unlocked PDF at the exact template size.
Overlay the PDF with the fresh hardcover template and inspect KDP's preview before ordering a physical proof.
Keep the evidence
Save KDP's written notice, the unchanged exported file, the selected print settings, and the template used for comparison. Those records make a support case reproducible, and they are what the technical spec guarantee asks for.
