Multiply the final formatted page count by the paper multiplier and work in inches: 300 pages × 0.002252 equals a 0.676-inch spine on white paper, while the same book on thicker cream stock is 300 × 0.0025, a 0.750-inch spine. The count must come from the finished interior file, not the manuscript, because every pagination change moves the spine. KDP counts every page side exactly as the interior PDF numbers them, so use the PDF's final total.
When can the spine carry text?
KDP places spine text only on books above 79 pages and asks for 0.0625 inches of clear space on each side of the lettering, because binding variance shifts the fold lines slightly on every copy. IngramSpark asks for at least 48 pages. Below those thresholds, leave the spine as artwork only — and avoid hard color boundaries exactly on the folds for the same reason.
