Why the platforms use different thresholds
Each print network uses its own paper stocks, binding equipment, quality tolerances, and distribution requirements. A page count that creates a printable spine on one service does not automatically create the same thickness on another. This is why a KDP multiplier should never be used to overrule an IngramSpark, Lulu, or Barnes & Noble Press title-specific template.
Page eligibility is only the first check
At 80 pages a KDP book is technically eligible, but the available spine may still be too narrow for a long title, subtitle, and author line. The lettering needs to remain readable and leave clear space on both sides of the fold. Shorten the spine copy, remove the subtitle, choose a restrained face, or omit spine text entirely rather than compressing letters into an unreadable strip.
What happens below the threshold
Continue the background artwork or color across the spine without any words. Avoid placing a sharp color boundary exactly on either fold, because ordinary binding variance can make one panel appear uneven. The cover can still look deliberate: a continuous texture, quiet gradient, or centered ornament works without creating a production risk.
How to verify before upload
Use the final formatted interior page count, selected paper, binding, and trim to generate a fresh printer template. Measure the actual spine, confirm the platform threshold, and keep the complete type lockup inside its safe zone.
