Section breaks are the hidden architecture of a Word book. They can separate front matter from the main text, restart numbering, suppress a running head on an opener, or change orientation. They can also create blank pages and headers that refuse to change when every chapter is given a section without a clear reason.

Use page breaks for ordinary chapter starts

A chapter that simply begins on the next page usually needs Page break before on its chapter-title style or a manual page break, not an independent section. Keeping ordinary chapters inside one section reduces header inheritance mistakes and makes later edits easier. Add a new section when the book's page rules genuinely change, such as entering the main text after roman-numbered front matter.

Choose Next Page, Odd Page, or Even Page deliberately

Next Page begins the section on the following page. Odd Page moves it to the next odd-numbered page, which can insert a blank when necessary for a recto opener; Even Page does the corresponding verso start. Continuous changes formatting without forcing a new page and is usually a poor fit for ordinary chapter openings. Show formatting marks so the break is visible while diagnosing pagination.

Treat headers and footers as separate links

Word links each new section to the previous one by default. Double-click the header or footer, decide whether its content should continue, and turn Link to Previous off only where a new rule begins. The header and footer links are independent: unlinking one does not unlink the other. Also inspect Different First Page and Different Odd & Even Pages because they create separate content regions within the same section.

Restart numbering once, then use automatic fields

A common trade-book setup uses lower-case roman numerals in front matter and arabic numbers beginning with the main text. Insert a Next Page section break before the main text, unlink the relevant footer or header, change the number format, and set the starting value. Never type folios on individual pages. Regenerate and inspect the contents after any pagination change.

Repair the source when a break misbehaves

Deleting a section break merges the surrounding sections and can pull the following section's formatting backward. Before deleting, record the margins, header, footer, numbering, first-page, and odd/even settings you intend to keep. Correct the break in a copy, scan every later transition, then export a fresh PDF and check inserted blanks, chapter sides, running heads, and page-number sequence.
