Fonts are part of the page geometry. If the printer substitutes one, line endings, page breaks, chapter starts, contents references, and the cover spine can all change. The proof is not that the font appears in Word or on your computer; the proof is its embedding status inside the exact PDF you will upload.
Check rights and the complete family first
A desktop font license may allow print output while restricting redistribution or ebook embedding, and some font files carry technical flags that prevent embedding. Read the current terms before designing the whole interior. Test roman, italic, bold, small caps, symbols, and any fonts arriving inside charts or imported documents, not only the body regular style.
Export instead of trusting screen appearance
Use the application's high-quality or publishing PDF export and enable the available option to embed fonts or preserve document fidelity. Avoid a workflow that silently rasterizes pages or substitutes printer fonts. KDP warns that some fonts brought through tables, charts, or another program may not embed, so test a representative chapter containing every content type.
Verify the exact PDF independently
Open the final candidate in a PDF viewer that reports font properties. Every used family and variant should show an embedded status. Search for an unexpected fallback family, select and copy text, inspect punctuation and accented names, and compare line endings against the approved proof. Record the file hash or version name so the checked PDF is the one uploaded.
Diagnose the source of a missing font
If a style is absent, locate the paragraphs, symbols, charts, or imported objects that call it. Replace the font with an embeddable licensed alternative or rebuild the object with controlled type. A subset can be valid when it contains the used glyphs, but confirm the printer accepts it and that no later edit introduces characters outside that subset.
Reconcile every replacement with pagination
A substitute typeface changes width, x-height, weight, and line breaking even at the same point size. Reproof the entire PDF, contents, index, chapter openings, and page count after replacement. If the count changes, update the print wrap. For EPUB, check the separate ebook license and confirm the book remains usable when a reader overrides the embedded face.
